The Great Crossing of the Alps

Jean Annequin’s quests will take him in Switzerland this time for a crossing from Airolo to Bivio. This constitutes a stage of his Great Alps Crossing, which destination is Wien, Austria.
“Back from a stage of the Great Crossing of the Alps.

It all started in 2009 in Tende’s pass. Each year, we cover about 8 or 9 stages so we can reach Wien in Austria and go see an opera at the Wiener Staatsoper. This year, the plan is to rally Airolo to Bivio in 8 days. We’re not looking for the fastest pace but more importantly, we want to enjoy the mountains and ski the nicest peaks and valleys.

This year, we’ve had pretty bad weather forecasts. Snow and fog.

Some accommodations were rather Spartan and some others were really classy. But none left us unmoved. The awards go to Surretta’s bivouac and the Post Hotel in Bivio. Both have completely opposed concepts but they offer the same experience. They are unique.

The Surretta bivouac turned out to be a red shack sitting in a magnificent belvedere. Very minimalist; roomy enough for 9, but it takes a lot of organization to fit 13 people in it. Thanks to Alain’s pugnacity, 4 of us have slept in a hole in the snow. The Post hotel in Bivio has everything you can desire after a long expedition: it’s inviting, warm, comfortable… All of this in a very old and tastefully decorated hotel. Sauna, hammam for some relaxing too!!!

There are lots of summits we can ski on our route. But the weather has often hastened the pace.”
